Peels

Peels are  treatments that involve application of certain active ingredients to exfoliate the skin.

Peels are used very commonly to treat the following skin concerns:

  • acne
  • enlarged pores
  • fine lines
  • scarring
  • redness
  • rosacea
  • hyperpigmentation
  • undereye dark circles

There are three types of peels, based on how deeply they exfoliate the skin:

  • Superficial peels
  • Medium-depth peels
  • Deep peels

The right choice depends on the concern that one is wanting to treat as well as the skin type.

Commonly used peels include

  • Alpha-hydroxy acids: Some examples include glycolic acid, lactic acid, and citric acid. These help to treat acne, open pores, pigmentation including post acne hyperpigmentation
  • Beta-hydroxy acids: Salicylic acid is one example, and it is especially beneficial for acne-prone skin and enlarged pores.
  • Trichloroacetic acid: This  is a deep peel and is commonly used to improve deeper pigmentaions like melasma, photodamaged skin, etc
  • Phenol: This powerful peeling agent is useful in deep peels and can improve the pigmentation caused due to severe sun damage. It can also improve fine lines and wrinkles on the skin

Usually a series of treatments are needed to show optimum benefits with peels. Skin may feel dry or flaky for a few days post the treatment.

For dark circle reduction, very mild and superficial peels are usually used to treat the darkening around the eyes. Hence multiple sessions may be required
