Under Eye Hollows

Hollows under the eyes or tear trough deformity can be due to dehydration or certain medical conditions. However, more commonly it is seen as an early sign of ageing. Loss of collagen and hence the supporting tissue, makes the eyes settle a little deeper into the socket, giving the appearance of sunken eyes. Many people have a deeper positioning of the eye as a genetic feature and hence would show the tear trough deformity at a much younger age. Under eye hollows make one look tired and unwell.

Treatments

Under Eye Puffiness And Bags

Bags or puffiness under the eyes is a very common occurrence with ageing. They are usually only a cosmetic concern and hardly ever a sign of an underlying medical condition. With age, the supporting tissue around the eyes becomes weaker and the fat that supports the eyeball also moves into the lower eyelid. These changes lead to appearance of under eye bags. Fluid retention, especially on waking up, adds to the puffy appearance of the lower eyelid.

Treatments

Eye Lid Laxity

Loss of collagen and elastin with age tends to affect the skin around the eyes very early as the skin is very thin. Hence the effects are also more severe on the skin around the eyes. Loss of supporting tissue leads to severe laxity and drooping of the skin of the eyelids. When this occurs on the upper eyelids, you can see folds of thin skin falling over the lid margin. This can lead to impairment of vision in very severe cases.

Dark Circles Around The Eyes

Dark circles around the eyes or periorbital darkening is extremely common in people of all ages. It is seen more commonly in skin of colour. They make you appear older than your age, tired and unwell.  Treating dark circles is one of the toughest challenges faced by a dermatologist as dark circles can have multiple causative factors apart from genetic predisposition. These include lack of sleep, eye strain, allergies, chronic medical conditions, for e.g., anaemia. Treating the cause is as crucial as treating the darkening of the skin itself.

Treatments

Thin Lips, Loss Of Shape Of Lips, Lip Augmentation

Thin or small lips may be a genetic feature or the lips may lose volume as a part of ageing process. Thin, droopy lips can make one look sad or depressed. The shape can be enhanced and volume can be added instantly with dermal fillers. Lip enhancement at a young age is a simpler procedure and can make a dramatic improvement in one’s appearance. However, at an older age, one needs to consider the overall ageing of the face (sagging of cheeks, loss of volume, etc} before going ahead with lip augmentation as maintaining the proportions is very important

Treatments

Darkening Of Lips

Lip pigmentation is usually caused by sun exposure. Just like the skin, the ultraviolet rays of the sun can cause darkening of the lips too. Apart from the sun, other factors that can lead to darkening of the lips are smoking, certain medical conditions and also some drugs. Frequent lip licking can also lead to dry chapped lips and eventual darkening.

Treatments

Dry Lips

Chapped or dry lips are extremely common and occur at all ages. Common causes are contact with saliva, lip licking, dry cold weather, certain drugs, chronic medical illnesses, etc

At times, dryness and peeling of lips may be due to specific conditions like actinic cheilitis or contact allergy to toothpaste, lipstick, etc
